Gift Reflects Alumna's Gratitude for SXU
Ms. Barbara Gallagher graduated from Saint Xavier University in 1959 with a degree in chemistry. She started as a freshman when Saint Xavier was at 49th and Cottage Grove, and moved with the rest of campus to its current home at 103rd and Central Park her sophomore year. Her graduating class had 49 students, including three chemistry majors. She fondly remembers the personal approach of Dr. K. Lucille McCluskey, chair of the Chemistry department at the time, and how she made chemistry "come alive" by teaching how it applied to all aspects of life.
Barbara is thankful for her education at SXU, which built the foundation for her long and impressive career. Starting in the research division at Armour and Company, she continued at American Chemical Society and spent time managing an editorial support group for a weekly and several monthly publications. Later in her career, Barbara managed the Society's college chemistry accreditation program. Direct experience with the accreditation process made her realize even more fully the value of small schools versus large programs.
Because of her close-knit, small-school experience, Barbara states: "I wanted to help ensure that Saint Xav's would continue offering its excellent programs to others. If we all give just a little, we can make a big difference. My education led me to a position where I was able to give back a portion of my savings in my IRA. Donations to Saint Xavier University from my IRA could count as part of my annual RMD (required minimum distribution) with no added tax burden to me. Now that I am retired, I am trying to make sure that my pennies last as long as my minutes, but I still want to remember Xav's and have included SXU in my estate plan."
