A Legacy: Keeping the Passion Alive
Dr. George McGuire (1918 - 1972) was a beloved member of Saint Xavier's education faculty from 1959 to 1971. He is remembered by former students as a caring and dedicated teacher who was always ready to offer them a sympathetic ear and kind words of support. Dr. McGuire was also a passionate mentor who encouraged his students to strive for excellence in the profession of education.
Dr. McGuire's wife, Eunice, who was also an educator, was an active partner in his scholarly endeavors and mentoring efforts. Together they welcomed countless Saint Xavier students into their hearts, actively living the Mercy values of excellence, compassion, hospitality, and service.
When Eunice McGuire passed away in 2008, she left a substantial donation to the University's School of Education to create a permanent investment in the preparation of future educators. This legacy will fund the Eunice and George McGuire Scholarship, which will be awarded to education majors who exemplify the qualities of academic excellence, respect, and hospitality that George and Eunice McGuire demonstrated throughout their lifetime. The first of these scholarships will be awarded in the fall 2010 semester.
Eunice's foresight and generosity demonstrates how alumni and friends of the University can create a lasting legacy that will help future generations of Saint Xavier students fulfill their dreams of a college education.
